Robin – Receptionist, with TNSC for almost 9 years
“In Danbury, there is a program called “Ready, Set, Read.” It was started by the United Way. Volunteers give an hour a week of their time to read to students who attend the Head Start Program which is a school readiness program for 3 and 4 year olds . English is a second language to a large percentage of these children, so reading to them is a great way to teach them new words, and to reinforce the words they already know. It has been a great pleasure for me to be able to read to a 4 year old class once a week. They are so willing to learn and enjoy the books I read. Sometimes one book is not enough for them! They always want me to read more. I usually stay for a little while after I am done reading and do a craft with them, or just play. We were playing with some play dough, and a few of the girls kept cutting out shapes and giving them to me. Being there, and spending time with them makes my day.
I am very lucky to work for a company that encourages me to volunteer in the community and in this case allows me to leave work a little early once a week to do so.”
